How to Make Your Own Indoor Greenhouse

Many people dream about having their very own greenhouse. However, some do not have the yard space for a greenhouse – even the tiniest of greenhouses.

This is where the indoor greenhouse comes in. You can finally grow all of the plants you want.

Making an Indoor Greenhouse

You can start small and make use of your old aquariums. Make sure that you are using lighting rated for the growth of plants. Use two inches of gravel over the entire bottom of the aquarium and add some water for increased humidity.

You can also use shelving and plastic to create an indoor greenhouse. Attach your grow lights at the bottom of the shelves for the plants below it. Place trays of plants on the shelves and add your gravel, water and plants just as you would for the aquarium greenhouse.

Greenhouse Uses

There are many reasons to have an indoor greenhouse. Some people use it for starting new seeds. Other people find that it is the perfect solution for growing their exotic plants. Hydroponics, experimentation and hosting parent plants are all great reasons to have an indoor greenhouse.

Mini Greenhouse Tips

Some tips that you will want to remember for your mini indoor greenhouse would be to avoid over watering, avoid full sun and to make sure that you are providing proper air circulation. When you do these little things, you will make a big difference for your plants.

Greenhouse Treatments

There are a few treatments to familiarize yourself with, such as disease and pest treatments. There is another treatment that many people tend to overlook and that is the structural rot and damage prevention treatment. In order to make sure that your lumber and entire structure will last longer, you must use lumber treated for avoiding rot.

Irrigation Methods

Researching the various irrigation methods will allow you to make sure that you are getting the most from your greenhouse. Your choices include misters, sprinklers, seep hoses and drip irrigation systems.

The misters and sprinklers are rather self-explanatory. Seep hoses are in the soil below the greenhouse, up to three inches. There are various perforations along the hose, which allows water to seep into the soil. The drip irrigation will work about the same as the seep hoses, with the difference being the water pipe sits on the soil surface.

Proper Temperatures for Tomatoes

The perfect temperatures for tomatoes during the day would be anywhere from 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. The maximum temperature is 95 degrees F. Once it gets any hotter than that, abnormal coloration will begin on the fruit and the root growth will slow down. The temperatures can fall a little lower at night, but should never go below 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Greenhouse Pests and Diseases

The notorious pests and diseases that you have to be careful of include powdery mildew, black root rot, aphids and thrips. While the powdery mildew is not going to kill your indoor greenhouse plants, it can ruin the appearance of your plants. Thielaviopsis basicola is what causes black root rot and it thrives in the greenhouses. Aphids suck the sap right from the plants and transmit diseases between many plants. Unfortunately, aphids are resistant to many of the insecticides out there so organic soaps and sprays are used.

Improving a Greenhouse

To make sure that your greenhouse is as effective as possible all year, you are going to want to add a thermostat controlled heater, ceiling fans for improved airflow and detectors for smoke and carbon monoxide. You also need to build several shelves and tables that are at roughly 30 inches tall. Proper lighting is also very important.

How to Help the Plants Grow

To make sure that your indoor greenhouse plants grow properly, you want to install the most necessary elements such as controlled lighting, humidity and temperature devices. Having proper ventilation and shade is equally important. You also have to visit your indoor greenhouse each day. You cannot neglect it even a little because that could have long term negative effects on your plants.

Flowering Plants of the Neotropics in a Greenhouse

The neotropic plants are a rich variety that grows abundantly. One popular neotropic foliage is that of the Acanthus, which is also known as bear’s britches. Then there is the Begonia family, which includes various flowering shrubs, flowers and blossoms. The perennial aquatic flowering plant, the White Lotus, is one of the plants that attract the largest variety of insects and even many hummingbirds.

Now that you know a little more about indoor greenhouses, you will want to get started. Growing your own plants will give you many benefits that you are not going to want to pass up on.
