Soil Gardening and Tillers
If you are planning on putting out a garden, then a tiller is one of the most important pieces of equipment you will need.
Without a tiller, you will have to use a hoe, shovel, and rake to break up your garden plot. It can be back-breaking work. You can get the job done in a fraction of the time with a tiller. Although tillers can be expensive, you can probably rent one from your local tool rental store for a very affordable price.
If you are a serious gardener, you will probably want to buy your own tiller though and there are several great brands on the market like Troy Bilt, Mantis, Honda, and Husqvarna. There are three basic types of garden tillers, the rear tine, front tine, and small garden tiller that is also called a cultivator.
Rear tine tillers are more expensive but best suited to breaking up a new garden plot. They are fairly easy to maneuver and can be operated by most gardeners because they don't require a lot of strength. These often come with attachments that let them tackle many other jobs around your yard as well. Troy Bilt is a well known manufacturer of rear tine tillers.
Front tine tillers are cheaper but are only suitable for re-working old gardens. They are not very effective at breaking up new soil. If you don't plan to enlarge your garden plot, a front tine tiller may suffice. Husqvarna garden tillers are available as front tine models.
Cultivators are useful for small gardens and for other types of gardening chores like mixing in compost and weeding between rows. They are lightweight and a lot smaller than a standard garden tiller so they are easier to direct between plants and move around. The Mantis Garden Tiller is a popular example of a small garden tiller.
